Type 4 — The DisplayLink dock (the Mac dual-screen workaround)

Here is the fact that sends most MacBook owners down a two-hour rabbit hole: base Apple Silicon chips — M1, M2, M3 and M4 without the Pro or Max suffix — drive exactly one external display. The charging number on the box is not the charging number you get

This is the most misread spec in the category, and it produces a specific, very common complaint: the laptop slowly loses battery while docked all day.

A dock rated at 100W does not deliver 100W to your laptop. The dock itself draws 10–20W to run its own controller, Ethernet, USB ports and any display processing. What is left goes to the host. So a “100W” dock realistically hands over something in the 80s, and a dock sold with a 30W supply cannot sustain a laptop that draws 65–96W under load — it will charge while you idle and drain while you work.

The practical rule: check what your laptop’s own charger is rated at, then treat the dock’s figure as that number minus roughly 15W of overhead. If the result is below your charger’s rating, you are buying a slow battery drain.

The five things that actually go wrong

Sort dock complaints by frequency and the same five causes account for nearly all of them. Only one of them is the dock’s fault.

1. The monitor is not detected. Most often the laptop’s USB-C port is data-and-charging only, with no video lane to borrow. Budget and older laptops do this constantly and never advertise it.

2. Only one of two monitors works. On a Mac, this is the MST limitation or the base-chip display cap, not a defect. On Windows it is usually MST switched off in the display settings.

3. The cable. Cables fail more often than docks do. A USB-C cable that physically fits may carry neither video nor full power delivery — and HDMI and DisplayPort cables are not interchangeable regardless of what the adapter suggests.

4. USB devices dropping in and out. Almost always the dock’s own power supply being undersized for what is plugged in, with cable quality and heat as the runners-up.
